First-year students are trained on machines and then guided through the fabrication process by others on the Baja team.
“It's a great opportunity for students to come in and get that hands-on-ness and that machine shop experience that you might not otherwise get in the classroom.”
"My first year was on the suspension team and at competition we broke every member of our suspension. I remember being on the track and I looked over and see our car on the back of a tractor with none of the wheels attached, and all of the suspension members were broken. We actually were able to fix it but we needed to make some big changes for next year."
– Gwyn Phelps, Project Manager
"We do a great deal of last minute maintenance. We can build a whole suspension in about 20 minutes if need be and we bring spares of the consumable parts with us to competition just in case. For instance, these tubes on the frame were welded on at competition from tube stock borrowed from Northeastern University, to comply with a rule that the judges caught us on last minute."
– Ben Lilly, Suspension Lead
"I think the most enjoyable thing about this project team is when it gets down to the wire and something breaks or something goes wrong, we always find a way to fix it."
